Personalized books for adults: the six kinds, compared honestly
By the Notre Livre editorial team · · 11 min read

Search for a personalized book for an adult and you get a strange mix: cartoon couples, romance novels where you are the heroine, books of facts about the year someone was born, and memoir services for your parents. They are all called personalized books, but they are very different gifts.
This guide sorts them into six kinds, with what each one actually personalizes, a typical price checked on the brands' own pages on October 28, 2026, and who each one suits. Prices and offers change often, so check each site before you order.

1. Illustrated love books
These are picture books for grown-ups, usually 24 to 30 pages. You pick names, hair and skin tone for two cartoon characters and choose reasons or captions from a set. They are quick to make, colorful and often funny. The story itself is the same for every couple; what changes is the cast.
Good for a new relationship or a light gift. Less good if you want something that tells your actual story. Our comparison of personalized love books lists the main US brands with pages, prices and delivery.
2. "All about them" books
The best known is Wonderbly's The Book of Everyone: 44 pages built from a name, a birth date and a few photos, filled with facts about the year they were born and pages you can edit. Wonderbly says you can preview every page before buying and that books are printed and dispatched in 2 to 4 working days. Editions exist for moms, milestones and romantic partners.
Good for a birthday or a parent who loves trivia. It is about the world around them more than about their own life.
3. Classic novels with their name inside
Book By You publishes full-length romance, mystery and teen novels in which you fill in the names, looks, friends and favorite places of the characters. The titles we checked run from 154 to 216 pages, at $39.95 in paperback, $59.95 in hardcover and $14.95 as an e-book. The company says its books are professionally written by real writers, not generated by AI.
Good as a playful gift for a reader. The plot is the same for everyone who orders that title.
4. Invented romance novels starring you (Ember Novels)
Ember Novels writes a new romance novel around the person who orders it. You answer questions about yourself and the love story you would like, and your answers shape the setting, the hero, the emotional dynamic and the heat level. On its own pages, Ember describes a novel of roughly 250 pages, delivered as EPUB and PDF within 2 to 3 days, for $149, written with AI and reviewed by editors before delivery.
It is a fantasy: a story you would like to live, not the story you have lived. That is the key difference with a book of your real love story.
5. Memoir books built from questions
Services such as Storyworth send a parent one question a week and print the answers as a hardcover at the end of the year. They suit parents who like to write and have the time. The result is in their own words, but only as complete as the answers they send. See our Storyworth review and the comparison of life story book services.
6. Your real story, written as a novel
Notre Livre writes the story you have actually lived. One person shares memories in a guided conversation with an AI interviewer: how you met, the first apartment, the trips, the hard year, the inside jokes. The book is written from those memories with AI assistance, in the first person, as a novel of 80 to 200 pages. Nothing is invented: if a detail is missing, it is asked for, not made up.
You read a free first page before paying, then review every chapter and ask for corrections before you approve the text. The love story book costs $35 digital, $69 hardcover or $95 Prestige, paid once, with US shipping included and sales tax calculated at checkout. Hardcovers are printed in the US. The same approach exists for a parent or grandparent: a life story book or a book about your dad.
How to choose
- If you want a laugh and a quick gift: an illustrated love book.
- If they love trivia about their birth year: an "all about them" book.
- If they love reading romance and would enjoy being the heroine or hero: Book By You for a classic plot with their name, Ember Novels for a new story built from their wishes.
- If you want to keep a parent's memories in their own words over a year: a question-based memoir service.
- If you want the real story of the two of you, or of a life, told as a book they will reread: a novel written from real memories.
Questions to ask before you order
- Is the story written for us, or are our names placed into a story written for everyone?
- How many pages, and is that a picture book or a novel?
- Can I see something before I pay?
- Can I correct the text before printing?
- Is AI involved, and is anything invented?
- Where is it printed, and how long does delivery take to my state?
- Is it a one-time payment or a subscription that renews?
